I beleive it’s a doorbell transformer, steps 110v ac down to 12v dc for the doorbell, usually tucked in the basement cieling or somwhere out of the way.

Door bell transformer.

My first guess would be a transformer of some sort. Have they tried googling that part number?

That looks sketchy as hell. Probably been like that for 40 years though.

Government mind control device. Pressing the red button means you are communist.

It hums... All the time.
I do that too, usually when I’m nervous. Or I forget the words....

It’s probably a bomb.

It’s a little step-down transformer. little transformers can be a little noisy.

Lick it and see if it tickles.

Things like that always remind me of a Steven Wright joke.
“ In my house there’s a light switch that doesn’t do anything. Every so often I would flick it on and off really fast a bunch of times . Yesterday, I got a letter from a woman in Germany saying “Knock it off.”

It says right on the data sticker. 24 VAC on the secondary. I’m guessing its for his attic-mounted HVAC system. Thermostats and HVAC controls run on 24 volts AC. I’m guessing the red switch is the reset switch for some internally mounted breaker. It’s in the ceiling of the closet so he doesn’t need to go into the attic to reset it if it trips. (Or it could be for the door bell like someone said.)
(This is all conjecture on my part. I’ve never been an HVAC person, but did study electrical engineering in college .)

My Aunt’s new house has several mystery switches; I assume one is for the broken pole light out front while another is for the broken flood light over her garage.
Even stranger are the four doorbell buttons inside the garage, none of which actually ring anything.

that doorbell should have some HRSPWRS!

I’mno expert, but it looks like a transformer. The label shows several voltages and 50 or 60Hz, secondary side is 24 V 100VA. It could be for a doorbell or lights.

Gauss field generator to protect against EMP damage from a high-altitude nuclear burst, the original owners must have installed this some time in the late 50's - early 60's.
Depress the red button right after the nuke detonates to make sure the zeta-particles don’t linger near the house and create nasty genetic mutations in your body.
